It came from a short growing season marked by delayed flowering and an early harvest, yet years later showed an impressive ability to retain balance and precision. Today it represents a historical chapter in Antinori's great Tuscan reds and, by virtue of its age and pedigree, belongs naturally among collectible fine wines.
Solaia comes from its namesake vineyard of around 20 hectares at Tenuta Tignanello, set between 350 and 400 metres above sea level with a south-west exposure on rocky calcareous soils rich in alberese and galestro. Antinori has produced Solaia since 1978 and releases it only in vintages considered suitable for the project. The 1991 blend includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc.
In a retrospective tasting devoted to historic Solaia vintages, Vinous rated the 1991 94/100, highlighting its freshness, focus and remarkable balance. Wine Spectator awarded it 90/100, noting mature fruit character with cassis, plum and earthy nuances. It is a mature, complex expression aimed above all at collectors and enthusiasts seeking archive vintages that document the history of Italian fine wine.
