Why Tuscan reds remain a pillar of Italian winemaking

Tuscany is one of the regions that has most defined Italian red wine's identity worldwide, thanks to a guiding grape, Sangiovese, capable of expressing itself in radically different ways depending on the area. Here, historic denominations of international fame coexist with small estates working with the same care, in a land where the vine has been intertwined for centuries with olive trees, cypresses, and medieval villages.

Chianti, Montalcino, Montepulciano, and Bolgheri: the territories of Tuscan Sangiovese

Chianti Classico DOCG, between Florence and Siena, requires at least 80% Sangiovese and, with its Gran Selezione category, has introduced a tier requiring grapes from estate-owned vineyards only and longer ageing. In Montalcino, Sangiovese, here called Sangiovese Grosso, gives rise on its own to Brunello, which by law must age at least four years before release, five for the Riserva. Not far away, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano requires at least 70% Prugnolo Gentile, another local name for the same grape. On the coast, the Bolgheri denomination paved the way for so-called Supertuscans, blends with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc that stand alongside or replace Sangiovese.

From easy-drinking Chianti to great ageing reds: the styles of Tuscany

Vintage Chianti offers a fresh, juicy red with Sangiovese's typical tangy note, meant for young consumption. Chianti Classico and Vino Nobile add structure and ageing potential. Brunello represents the peak of longevity, with firm tannins that soften after years in bottle. The Bordeaux-style reds of the coast, such as those from Bolgheri, combine the power of international grapes with a recognisable Mediterranean imprint.

At the table with Tuscan reds: pairings that work

Young Chianti pairs naturally with everyday Tuscan cuisine, from cured meats to ribollita. Chianti Classico and Vino Nobile go with grilled meats and aged cheeses. Brunello deserves important dishes, such as bistecca alla fiorentina or game, able to stand up to its structure. The coastal Bordeaux-style reds find in their silky tannin an ideal companion for elaborate red meats and braises.

Which Tuscan red to choose, depending on the occasion

For an everyday meal, a Chianti DOCG remains the most natural choice. For an occasion calling for more structure, Chianti Classico or Vino Nobile di Montepulciano offer a good balance between elegance and conviviality. Anyone seeking a contemplative experience, one that evolves in the glass, will find their label in Brunello di Montalcino. Those who love a more international style, with softer tannins, can look to a red from Bolgheri.

      Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Chianti and Chianti Classico?

Chianti Classico comes from a smaller, historic area between Florence and Siena, with stricter production rules than Chianti DOCG, which is made across a much wider geographical area of Tuscany.

Why does Brunello di Montalcino take so long before it can be sold?

Regulations require a minimum of four years' ageing from harvest, at least two of them in barrel, precisely to allow the tannins of Sangiovese Grosso to soften and develop complexity.

      What are Supertuscans?

These are wines born outside the classic rules of Tuscan denominations, often using Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Cabernet Franc alongside or in place of Sangiovese, which later became a symbol of winemaking innovation.

Is Vino Nobile di Montepulciano related to Chianti?

Yes, they share the same main grape, Sangiovese, locally called Prugnolo Gentile in Montepulciano, but they come from different areas with their own production rules.
