It comes from the Sorì Tildìn vineyard in Barbaresco, acquired by the Gaja family in 1967 and first bottled separately in 1970. In the Piedmontese dialect, “Sorì” refers to the sun-favoured top of a hillside, while “Tildìn” was the affectionate nickname of Clotilde Rey, an important figure in the Gaja family’s history. Classified as Langhe Nebbiolo DOC, the 2006 vintage was produced predominantly from Nebbiolo with a small proportion of Barbera.
The vineyard lies at approximately 270 metres above sea level on soils composed mainly of marl, clay and limestone, giving the wine depth, structure and a distinctive mineral character. Fermentation and maceration take place in stainless-steel tanks, followed by approximately twelve months in barriques and a further twelve months in large oak casks. In the glass, Sorì Tildìn 2006 displays a deep garnet colour and a layered bouquet of ripe cherry, red berries, rose petals, spices, cedar, graphite, truffle and balsamic nuances. The palate is elegant and concentrated, with fine, integrated tannins, lively freshness and a remarkably long, aromatic and polished finish.
A fine wine for contemplation and important occasions, it pairs beautifully with braised beef, roast meats, game, lamb, truffle-based dishes and mature cheeses. Serve at approximately 16-18 °C. The bottle should preferably be stood upright before opening, with decanting assessed gently according to its condition. As with any mature collectable wine, aromatic development may vary depending on storage history and the individual bottle.
