Fine WineGiuseppe Mascarello Villero Barolo 2022 comes from one of the distinguished vineyard sites of Castiglione Falletto, at the heart of the Langhe. Made entirely from Nebbiolo, it reflects the estate's traditional approach: a measured fermentation followed by long maturation in Slavonian oak. The emphasis remains on the grape and the particular character of Villero rather than the flavours of new wood.
Villero is an established single-vineyard designation within Barolo. Giuseppe Mascarello farms a parcel of approximately 0.62 hectares here, part of the varied hillsides that give Castiglione Falletto its distinctive Nebbiolo expressions. This focused origin is central to the wine's appeal: it is a single-cru Barolo, made to reflect a specific place rather than a blend of vineyards.
The Mascarello family has been estate-bottling wines since 1881. Across generations, it has remained closely associated with individual vineyard names, careful grape selection and traditional oak casks. Villero sits alongside Monprivato in the estate's range, but represents a different vineyard and its own interpretation of Nebbiolo.
The selected 100% Nebbiolo grapes undergo traditional floating-cap fermentation for approximately 16–22 days. The wine then spends around 30 months in medium-sized Slavonian oak casks, allowing its structure to develop while keeping the vineyard's identity clearly in focus.
Villero displays the garnet colour associated with Barolo. Its characteristic profile combines floral and fruit aromas with aromatic finesse and a balanced, silky approach on the palate. Nebbiolo's underlying structure also makes it appealing to collectors who enjoy following the evolution of traditional Piedmontese reds.
The 2022 Villero belongs in a tasting devoted to Barolo's individual crus, in a comparison of Castiglione Falletto vineyards or in a cellar built around classic Italian reds. Serve it at approximately 18°C with red meat, game or mature cheeses. For cellaring, keep the bottle on its side, protected from light and sudden temperature changes.
