The Primitivo Rudiae di Vigneti Reale dedicates the name and label to the ancient Messapian city (the Messapians were an Indo-European tribe who in classical antiquity occupied the territory corresponding to the current Salento), the birthplace of the Latin poet Quintus Ennius, where one of the entrance gates to the subsequent city of Lecce was later erected. The Primitivo grapes are carefully handpicked in the month of August; they ferment and macerate for about 10-12 days at a temperature that never exceeds 30°C, then the wine matures half in steel, half in large wooden barrels.
The Salento Primitivo Rudiae by Vigneti Reale is presented in a concentrated and bright ruby red color. In the olfactory profile, notes of plum, cherry, black currant, and licorice alternate, with hints of bell pepper, myrtle, and hay, in a frame of sweet spices. The palate is warm, with a rigorous tannin and a balsamic finish. This bottle should be uncorked an hour before drinking and is excellent paired with grilled meats, even with robust marinades, such as Texan brisket, beef brisket cooked slowly on the barbecue.
