Fine WineGiuseppe Mascarello Barolo Perno 2022 comes from Vigna Santo Stefano in Monforte d’Alba, a vineyard with its own identity within the Barolo appellation. Here, Nebbiolo is handled in the estate's traditional style, with a classic fermentation and extended maturation in Slavonian oak. The wine offers a compelling way to discover how individual sites in the Langhe give different expressions of the same grape.
The Santo Stefano vineyard lies in the hamlet of Perno, part of Monforte d’Alba. It occupies a site at approximately 300 metres above sea level, facing west-southwest. Its clay-sandy, calcareous soils contain brown clay and grey sands of marine origin. This specific setting gives the wine a different geographical identity from the estate's Monprivato Barolo in Castiglione Falletto.
The wine is made entirely from Nebbiolo, specifically the Michet biotype. The Mascarello family has owned the Santo Stefano vineyard since 1989. Founded in 1881, the estate has long focused on expressing individual vineyards through traditional techniques rather than blending their characters into a single house style.
Selected grapes undergo traditional floating-cap fermentation for approximately 16–22 days. The wine then spends around 30 months in medium-sized Slavonian oak casks. This long, measured maturation develops Nebbiolo's structure while keeping the vineyard's own expression at the forefront, without an overt signature of new wood.
The wine shows the garnet-red colour with orange highlights associated with mature Barolo styles. Its distinctive character brings together intense, elegant fruit aromas and a full, balanced palate with notable structure. This combination makes it appealing not only for a special tasting but also for collectors interested in the evolution of traditional Piedmontese reds.
Barolo Perno 2022 is a particularly interesting choice for exploring the different vineyards of the Barolo appellation, especially in a comparison between Monforte d’Alba and Castiglione Falletto. It also makes an excellent addition to a collection of classic Nebbiolo wines. Serve at approximately 18°C with red meat, game and aged cheeses; store the bottle on its side, away from light and temperature fluctuations.
