AffinamentoGaja Gaia & Rey 2024 offers a distinctive interpretation of Chardonnay from the Langhe, combining carefully chosen vineyard sites with considered oak maturation. The project began in the late 1970s and reflects the Gaja family’s ambition to express the character of Piedmont through a white grape variety with an international reputation.
The fruit comes from Giacosa in Treiso, planted in 1979, and Rivette in Serralunga d’Alba, planted in 1989. These different origins contribute to a wine rooted in its place while remaining unmistakably Chardonnay. Its name honours Gaia Gaja and her grandmother Clotilde Rey.
Oak plays an important role in the wine’s production, with maturation of approximately 18 months. Rather than defining the wine through a single tasting descriptor, Gaia & Rey is best understood through its vineyard origins, vintage and the estate’s long-term approach. The 2024 vintage received 94+ points from Wine Advocate.
This is a compelling bottle for discovering a landmark white wine from Gaja, comparing distinguished Chardonnays or exploring the diversity of Piedmont beyond its famous reds. Its provenance and continuity also make it an interesting wine to follow as it develops with bottle age.
