Fine WineGaja Barbaresco 2023 captures the character of Nebbiolo from the Langhe through careful vineyard selection and blending. Rather than coming from a single site, it brings together fruit from 14 vineyards within the village of Barbaresco, each vinified separately before the final blend. This is the historic flagship of the Gaja family, whose roots in Barbaresco date back to 1859.
The vineyards span a total of 21.4 hectares at 250–330 metres above sea level, with vines averaging approximately 40 years of age. The wine is made from 100% Nebbiolo. Separate fermentation and maceration preserve the character of the individual plots, while blending brings their different qualities into a coherent, distinctive Barbaresco DOCG.
After an unusually dry period early in the season, substantial rain in May and June slowed ripening. Hot summer weather and fluctuating conditions in August made the growing season demanding. The estate describes the resulting wines as particularly fresh and aromatically complex. Each lot spends 12 months in oak before blending, followed by a further 12 months of maturation.
The 2023 opens with rose, violet and delicate floral scents, followed by bergamot, wild strawberry and redcurrant. On the palate it is medium-bodied, smooth yet compact, with fine tannins, clear freshness and a long, fragrant finish. Its distinctive quality lies in finesse and aromatic definition rather than sheer weight.
The 2023 Barbaresco received 95/100 from Falstaff in 2026. The score applies to this precise vintage and offers an additional point of reference for collectors and enthusiasts seeking one of Piedmont’s signature Nebbiolo wines.
