Corpo robustoMichele Satta's Bolgheri Superiore Piastraia is proof that Michele's project (back in 1991) of planting Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot alongside Sangiovese and Syrah in order to better showcase the Bolgheri territory turned out to be an excellent idea. The wine is composed of these varietals in equal parts, each harvested from various plots on the estate. The harvest begins in early September with the Merlot and continues until the first week of October with the Cabernet Sauvignon. Each variety is fermented separately in 30 hl truncated cone oak barrels, with its own natural yeasts. The maceration time varies and initially punching down takes place twice daily; afterwards it takes place only once a day and, if necessary, there is an open pumping over. The wine then ages in French wood barriques (20% of which are new) between 18 and 24 months and again subsequently in the bottle.
Michele Satta's Bolgheri Superiore Piastraia is a bright ruby red. The nose has interesting complexity, with notes of wild berries in jam, Mediterranean scrub, cedar wood, cardamom, pepper, eucalyptus, and cocoa. The sip is elegant, with lively freshness, lasting tannins, and a fruity, balsamic flavor. This is an opulent wine that pairs well with pheasant stuffed with sausage.
