Corpo robustoTime is central to the character of Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2016. This is a wine in which concentration is matched by freshness and poise: the house’s long-established approach favours elegance over sheer power. Offered here as a 750 ml bottle in a wooden presentation case, it is suited to thoughtful gifting as well as long-term enjoyment.
Founded in 1857, Bertani draws the fruit for its flagship Amarone from Tenuta Novare in Arbizzano di Negrar, near Verona. The vineyards grow on limestone and basalt soils and are trained with a double Guyot system. The blend is deliberately focused: 80% Corvina Veronese and 20% Rondinella. Corvina gives the wine its distinctive aromatic identity and lively backbone, while Rondinella adds another dimension to the traditional composition.
Carefully selected bunches are laid out in traditional drying lofts on racks known as arèle. The grapes dry naturally, without artificially forcing the temperature or humidity, concentrating their fruit before pressing and fermentation. The estate’s established method includes fermentation in concrete vats, followed by approximately seven years in large, 50–100-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks and further bottle ageing. Extended time in large casks encourages integration and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s regional identity.
An intense ruby colour with garnet reflections opens onto aromas of plum, cherry, morello cherry, dried fruit, tea leaves, liquorice and spice, with touches of cocoa, tobacco and balsamic herbs. The palate is full yet controlled, with lively acidity, well-integrated tannins and a long, savoury finish. It is an expression of Amarone that combines depth with a remarkably composed texture.
The 2016 vintage received 97 points from James Suckling, 96 from Wine Enthusiast and 94 from Vinous. Serve at 16–18°C, preferably in a generous red-wine glass, alongside braised beef, roast meat, game, rich meat sauces and mature cheeses. Its balance and capacity to evolve also make it a rewarding bottle for the cellar. 750 ml; 15% ABV according to the producer; contains sulphites.
