Corpo robustoOne Brunello shaped by three distinct faces of Montalcino. Val di Suga Brunello di Montalcino 2021 blends fruit from Vigna del Lago, Poggio al Granchio and Vigna Spuntali, bringing the estate’s different hillside exposures into a single wine. Rather than emphasising one vineyard, this expression of Sangiovese seeks a balance between aromatic precision, freshness and structure.
The three vineyard areas face northwest, southeast and southwest. They encounter different influences, from cooler continental conditions to warmer Mediterranean air and the day-to-night temperature swings around Monte Amiata. Soils range from galestro rock to sand and clay. Bringing these parcels together is central to the identity of Val di Suga, a winery whose history in Montalcino dates to the 1970s.
Made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes, the wine undergoes destemming and careful selection, then a controlled fermentation lasting approximately 8–12 days. A further 15–20 days of post-fermentation maceration supports its structure. The producer specifies 24 months in 50-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks, followed by 12 months in concrete tanks and additional bottle maturation. The use of large casks maintains a clear focus on Sangiovese fruit.
A bright ruby-red colour introduces aromas of cherry, raspberry, violet and bitter orange, with gentle balsamic undertones. The palate is fresh and poised, its well-defined tannins supporting a long finish with hints of cherry and chocolate. The 2021 vintage received 94 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 93 from Decanter, 93 from Wine Spectator, 92 from Vinous, 92 from Falstaff and 91 from James Suckling.
Serve at 18–20°C with roast or braised beef, game, mushroom dishes and mature cheese. According to the estate, the wine has a 15–20-year ageing potential when stored appropriately, developing more complex dried-fruit and citrus notes over time. 750 ml bottle; 14% ABV; contains sulphites.
