Fine WineSolaia 2023 comes from its namesake vineyard at Tenuta Tignanello, in the heart of Chianti Classico. The roughly 20-hectare site faces southwest at 350-400 metres above sea level on soils rich in alberese limestone and galestro. The blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc, a combination that has made Solaia one of the benchmarks of contemporary Tuscan wine.
The final stage of the 2023 growing season progressed regularly. Harvest began in early October with Sangiovese, continued with Cabernet Franc and ended on 13 October with Cabernet Sauvignon. After berry selection and fermentation in truncated-cone tanks, malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques. The wine then ages for about 15 months in new French oak barrels, with the different lots kept separate before the final blend.
Deep ruby red with purple highlights. The nose shows blackberry, blueberry and blackcurrant, joined by plum, fig, pepper and liquorice. The palate is rich and vibrant, with silky tannins, an energetic yet refined mid-palate and a long finish marked by bitter cocoa and coffee.
The 2023 vintage received 97/100 from James Suckling and 98/100 from Decanter, confirming the wine's status as a serious long-lived Tuscan red.
