Fine WineA great Brunello can convey more than the character of a single vineyard. Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino 2021 brings together different parts of Montalcino in the Gaja family’s interpretation of 100% Sangiovese. This is a finely structured Tuscan red for wine lovers interested in the breadth of the appellation as well as the individual vineyard wines for which the estate is known.
The estate takes its name from the historic parish church located on the property. Its Brunello draws on grapes from multiple sites within Montalcino, including parcels associated with Rennina and Sugarille and fruit from Torrenieri in the northeastern part of the appellation. Clay and limestone, with galestro in the Rennina and Sugarille area, contrast with the clay, tuff and sand found around Torrenieri. These different soils form part of the wine’s distinctive sense of place.
The 2021 vintage combines ripe fruit with energetic acidity and a well-defined tannic frame. Following vinification, the wine spends 24 months in oak before a further six months in concrete vats. This sequence allows its structure to develop while retaining the recognisable expression of Sangiovese and its Tuscan origin.
Mineral notes and sweet spice lead into bergamot, rosehip and delicate floral tones. The palate is juicy and balanced, with freshness, composed tannins and a persistent savoury finish recalling ripe plum. The 2021 has been awarded 96/100 by James Suckling, 95/100 by Wine Spectator and 93/100 by Falstaff, all for this precise wine and vintage.
It makes a compelling choice for a dinner centred on roast red meats, game or truffle dishes. Serve at approximately 18–20°C. Its balance of acidity and tannins also makes it worth considering for careful cellar ageing, provided it is stored under suitable conditions.
