Ornellaia 2023 interprets Bolgheri through a combination of concentration, energy and precision. The vintage, named “La Vitalità”, brings together generous fruit and the freshness preserved during the final stages of ripening, shaping a powerful yet measured wine designed to reveal the finesse of its terroir over time.

The vitality of the 2023 vintage

After a mild winter and a rainy spring, summer was warm without extreme temperature peaks. Rainfall eased water stress and supported gradual ripening; late-August rain and cool September nights helped preserve acidity and aromatic complexity. For the estate, the result is a particularly successful balance between power and elegance.

Vinification and ageing

The grapes were hand-picked into 15 kg crates and selected on a double sorting table before and after destemming, then gently crushed. Each grape variety and vineyard parcel was vinified separately. Fermentation took place in stainless steel and concrete tanks at 26–30 °C for about one week, followed by roughly 15 days of maceration.

Malolactic fermentation took place mainly in oak barriques, 70% new and 30% once-used. The wine aged for about 18 months in barriques: after the first 12 months the final blend was assembled, then returned to wood for a further 6 months. Before release, the wine spends another 12 months ageing in bottle.

Tasting profile

The colour is a deep, vibrant ruby red. The nose shows blueberry, blackberry and other ripe black fruits, joined by toasted almond, cocoa and Mediterranean shrub. The palate is broad and concentrated while retaining a plush, precise texture; its powerful structure never loses finesse, with silky, chiselled tannins carrying a very long and persistent finish.
