First produced in 1977, Le Pergole Torte was the first pure Sangiovese vinified in the Radda in Chianti area, a decision that helped define Montevertine's independent identity and gives older vintages particular appeal for collectors of Italian fine wine.
Montevertine lies in the heart of the Chianti hills in Radda in Chianti, at around 425 metres above sea level. Le Pergole Torte is made from 100% Sangiovese sourced from the estate's historic vineyards. Winemaking follows the traditional house method, with alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in cement vats. Ageing includes about 12 months in Allier barriques and 12 months in Slavonian oak casks, followed by further bottle ageing.
Retrospective tastings describe the 1994 as a mature, powerful Sangiovese with an evolved profile, showing cherry, tobacco, ferrous tones and tertiary nuances. Wine Spectator awarded it 90/100, while Vinous rated it 89/100. The reported alcohol level for this vintage is 13% abv. With a bottle more than thirty years old, storage history, fill level and provenance are essential factors in the final drinking experience. Recommended serving temperature: 17-18 °C.
