Fine WineSome Barolos speak for an entire appellation; others are inseparable from a particular hillside. Giuseppe Mascarello Monprivato 2022 belongs to the second group. It is made exclusively from Nebbiolo grown at Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Langhe, and expresses one of Barolo's most distinguished vineyard sites through an unwaveringly traditional approach. Its individuality comes from place, grape variety and patient maturation rather than an assertive oak signature.
The Monprivato vineyard covers approximately six hectares at an altitude of 280 metres, with a south-west-facing exposure. Its Miocene-origin soils consist of calcareous silty-clay marls. The site can be traced in cadastral records as far back as 1666, while the Mascarello family's ownership dates to 1904. Over generations, the hillside has earned a reputation for Nebbiolo wines distinguished by finesse, depth and longevity.
The wine is made from 100% Nebbiolo. Fruit selection and a focus on one vineyard preserve a recognisable identity across different vintages. Giuseppe Mascarello has traditionally reserved the Monprivato name for harvests considered worthy of the site's exacting standards.
Fermentation follows the classic approach, with a floating cap for approximately 20–26 days. The wine then matures for around 30 months in Slavonian oak casks. The intention is not to overlay the fruit with the flavour of new barrels, but to allow Nebbiolo to develop while keeping the vineyard's character in focus.
The Monprivato style brings together red fruit, floral notes and spice with the presence and long finish associated with fine Nebbiolo from Castiglione Falletto. Further nuances can emerge over time. The 2022 vintage is especially appealing to collectors and enthusiasts seeking a single-vineyard Barolo to follow through its development, as well as to anyone exploring the enduring traditions of the Langhe.
This edition of Monprivato 2022 comes in a 1.5-litre Magnum, holding the equivalent of two standard bottles, and includes a wooden presentation case. The larger format suits a special dinner, a thoughtful gift or a collection of classic wines from the Langhe. The case is part of the presentation, while the contents retain the vineyard identity and traditional winemaking of Giuseppe Mascarello. For enthusiasts who enjoy following Nebbiolo as it matures, the Magnum is also a compelling cellar format.
Pair it with red meat, game or mature cheeses and serve at approximately 18°C. For cellaring, store the bottle on its side, away from light and temperature fluctuations. Monprivato is a wine made with evolution in mind rather than a need for immediate drinking.
