Fine WineWithin the celebrated Monprivato vineyard of Castiglione Falletto, a carefully selected parcel yields one of Piedmont's most distinctive traditional Barolo Riservas. Giuseppe Mascarello Cà d’Morissio 2018 is made from the Michét biotype of Nebbiolo and takes the vineyard's character through an exceptionally patient maturation. It appeals to collectors and wine lovers seeking the individuality of a small vineyard selection, a historic family tradition and the long-term development of fine Barolo.
Monprivato lies in Castiglione Falletto in the Langhe, on a largely south-west-facing hillside. Its calcareous, silty soils are an important part of the vineyard's identity. The Mascarello family's connection to this slope dates to 1904, when Maurizio Mascarello acquired part of the property.
Cà d’Morissio is distinct from the estate's regular Monprivato bottling. This Riserva comes from a selection of Nebbiolo Michét propagated from old vines within the same site. Its name honours Maurizio, known locally as Morissio. The first Cà d’Morissio vintage was 1993, reflecting the family's longstanding effort to preserve a particular expression of Nebbiolo in the vineyard.
The grapes are 100% Nebbiolo Michét, carefully selected and harvested by hand. Traditional fermentation with a floating cap lasts approximately 20–26 days. The wine then matures for around 40 months in medium-sized Slavonian oak casks. Rather than relying on a pronounced new-oak character, this process gives the Nebbiolo time to develop while retaining the hallmarks of the estate's classic winemaking.
Compared with the non-Riserva Monprivato, Cà d’Morissio has a different vine selection and a longer ageing period. The wine is generally released six or seven years after the harvest. Time is central to the identity of this cuvée, both in the cellar and after bottling.
The house style of this Riserva brings together a garnet colour, expressive fruit, spice and floral nuances, substantial body and a long, persistent finish. Strength and elegance sit side by side in a traditionally made Barolo whose complexity can continue to unfold.
The 2018 vintage is an opportunity to collect a special selection from one of Barolo's historic sites. The estate gives an indicative 25–30-year ageing horizon for this wine, with the actual evolution of any bottle depending on its storage history and condition.
Serve at approximately 18°C, alongside red meat, game or aged cheeses. It is equally suited to a focused tasting of the great single-vineyard wines of Barolo. Store bottles horizontally, away from light and sudden temperature changes.
