The 2024 vintage expresses Etna through 100% Nerello Mascalese grown in Castiglione di Sicilia, in the Feudo di Mezzo district. The 25-30-year-old vines stand at 670-770 metres above sea level on volcanic, alluvial and clay soils, a setting Cottanera translates into a red wine with structure, tension and a clear sense of place.

In the glass it shows a light ruby-garnet colour. The aromatic profile highlights floral notes, joined by red-fruit nuances. The palate is broad and structured, supported by dense, austere yet not harsh tannins.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapes are hand-picked into crates. After destemming, alcoholic fermentation takes place at controlled temperature for around 10-12 days, while skin maceration continues for about 25 days at 27-28 °C. The wine ages for 10 months in stainless steel, followed by 6 months in bottle.

Food pairing

It works particularly well with mushroom-based first courses, meat sauces and mature cheeses. Mushroom risotto, pasta with beef ragù and braised beef are natural matches for its structure.
