Fine Wine fine wineRare Millésime 2012 comes from one of Champagne's most selective vintages: a year marked by difficult weather early in the season followed by a hot, dry summer that enabled high-quality ripening. Historically associated with Piper-Heidsieck and today expressed through the Rare Champagne house, the cuvée combines precision, depth and remarkable ageing potential.
The blend is 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir from eleven crus. After fermentation and full malolactic fermentation, the wine spends at least 10 years on the lees; dosage is 8 g/l. This extended ageing is central to its silky texture, aromatic complexity and depth.
Winter and spring frosts, rain and hail made the first part of the season challenging. From mid-July, warmer and drier conditions created an ideal setting for ripening. Yields were low, but grape quality was high enough for Rare Champagne to declare the vintage.
Pale gold in colour, with fine and elegant bubbles. The nose reveals brioche, almond, mango, guava and bergamot, followed by floral and spicy nuances of lilac, honey, black tea, white pepper, incense and light smoky notes. The palate is concentrated yet lively, with citrus, a silky texture and a remarkably persistent saline, mineral finish.
Rare 2012 is both a collectible Champagne and a gastronomic wine: a limited-production vintage combining richness, freshness and longevity. The house indicates ageing potential to at least 2044, while the vintage has received top international recognition, including 100/100 from James Suckling.
Serve between 8 and 12 °C. Its structure and saline character make it an excellent match for shellfish, scallops, fine fish, caviar, delicate white meats and dishes featuring white truffle.
