Corpo robustoCastello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino 2021 brings together the depth of Sangiovese and the freshness needed to keep a powerful red wine in balance. Ripe fruit, polished tannins and lively acidity define a vintage that rewards a place at the table as well as careful cellaring.
Made from Sangiovese grown on the hillsides of Montalcino, the wine draws on vineyards with varied soils, from stony, calcareous marine clay-sands to mineral-rich blue-grey clays. A late April frost affected the area, followed by a relatively dry spring and a warm, breezy summer. The resulting wine combines concentration with distinct freshness.
Fermentation takes place in Banfi’s Horizon vats combining stainless steel and French oak, at controlled temperatures of 25–30°C. The wine then spends at least two years in French oak: 80% in 60- and 90-hectolitre casks and 20% in 350-litre oak vessels. This approach lends structure while allowing the Sangiovese character to remain central.
Ruby red with subtle garnet highlights, it offers aromas of plum, ripe cherry and small red berries, followed by liquorice and pipe tobacco. On the palate, smooth tannins and vibrant acidity lead to a long, persistent finish. The 2021 vintage received 94 points from James Suckling and 93 points from Robert Parker.
Serve at 16–18°C with roasted meats, game or mature cheeses. Its depth and balance also give it excellent potential to develop in bottle.
