Corpo robustoSiepi di Mazzei Castello di Fonterutoli is, according to Gambero Rosso, "one of the 50 wines that have changed the style of Italian wine". Since its origins, Siepi, owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, has been a model farm, still worked today with the same respect for the territory. A unique position, a special microclimate, and the intuition of the early 1980s to plant Merlot as the ideal complement to Sangiovese in a particularly suitable terroir. We are at 260 meters above sea level, with a south-southwest exposure, on soil predominantly composed of alberese (a calcareous sedimentary rock). The grapes, Merlot and Sangiovese in equal quantities, are harvested and vinified separately in steel, then the wines are aged for 18 months in small 225-liter French oak barrels (70% new). After blending, Siepi matures for another 4 months in concrete tanks.
Siepi di Castello di Fonterutoli is a deep, vibrant ruby red. The nose is opulent, with notes of plum and blackberry jam, licorice, underbrush, and then peony, Damask rose, cloves, licorice, tobacco, Oolong tea, and mountain pine. The palate is incredibly fresh, with a significant tannin well tamed by the generous alcohol, and a savory and tasty finish. Excellent with braised thrushes.
