Corpo medioIdda Etna Rosso DOC 2024 offers a distinctive interpretation of Mount Etna through a partnership between the Gaja and Graci families. Rather than relying on sheer weight, this Sicilian red brings together freshness, finely drawn structure and the character of indigenous grape varieties. Idda means “she” in Sicilian: an affectionate, respectful way of referring to the volcano itself.
The grapes come from vineyards in Biancavilla on the south-west side of Mount Etna. This area is home to some of the volcano’s oldest soils, characteristically lighter in colour than those found in other parts of the mountain. The setting gives Etna Rosso DOC a particular geographical identity and highlights a side of Etna that differs from its better-known northern slopes.
Idda Rosso is made from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, varieties central to Etna’s red-wine tradition. It spends 18 months ageing in oak and concrete, combining the influence of wood with a maturation approach that maintains fruit definition and a strong sense of place.
On the nose, the wine shows blackcurrant, raspberry, cherry and black-pepper notes. The palate is fresh and layered, with well-integrated tannins, satisfying length and an aftertaste that recalls dark cherry and spice. Medium-bodied and approachable now, it also offers the potential to evolve with further cellaring. The 2024 vintage received 93 points from James Suckling.
Choose this bottle to discover a different facet of Etna reds and the shared vision of two prominent Italian wine families, where the landscape, local grapes and careful winemaking remain firmly in focus.
