Amarula is a South African cream liqueur, created in 1989 from the Marula fruit, with a slightly fruity flavor and an alcohol content of 17 percent. It is the second best-selling liqueur in the world after Baileys Irish Cream. The cream is popular in Africa, particularly on the southern and eastern coasts, and is exported globally. Despite popular belief about drunken elephants, disproved by research, Marula is related to these animals, so much so that the manufacturer supports their protection through research programs. The production of Amarula involves fruit selection and processing, fermentation, distillation and aging in oak barrels for two years before being mixed with cream to create the cream liqueur.
