Nerello Mascalese Planeta's 1614 eruption comes from the vineyards planted on the north side of Etna, between the lava flows and the woods that surround Passopisciaro. It owes its name to the legendary eruption of 1614, which lasted 10 years, the longest of all time. The 91% Nerello Mascalese and 9% Nerello Cappuccio grapes come from the vineyards of Pietramarina (510 m asl), Sciaranuova (850 m asl) and Feudo di Mezzo (605 metres above sea level). They are harvested at different times starting from 10 October and are immediately refrigerated at 10° C, then selected by hand. After crushing and destemming, they ferment at 25° C in steel vats and remain on the skins for 21 days, with short pumping over; malolactic fermentation follows, again in steel. The wine thus obtained is aged in oak barrels for 12 months.
Eruzione 1614 Nerello Mascalese enters the glass with a beautiful crystalline ruby red colour; on the nose, it is extremely territorial: smoky minerality, medicinal herbs and balsams, Mediterranean scrub flowers. At the sip, it has elegant tannins, fragrant acidity of herbs, fruity flavour and length. Very good with traditional horse meat balls.
