Montiano di Falesco Cotarella is a historical label. Riccardo Cotarella, one of the most famous and influential winemakers in the world, also known as the "Wizard of Merlot" and owner of the Falesco winery (now Cotarella), has given new life to this iconic wine: the Montiano. One of the first Italian wines to be produced from 100% Merlot grapes. In addition to being the vintage of the restyling, 2016 is also the best vintage ever for this wine (together with 2001 and 2010). 30% fewer bottles were produced to increase quality. We advise every enthusiast to keep at least one bottle in the cellar of the first vintage of the new era of the famous Montiano di Cotarella. Montiano 2016 was made from 100% Merlot grapes grown in the territories of Montefiascone and Castiglione in Teverina, in the province of Viterbo. The vineyard of origin stands on volcanic soils, rich in structure, at an average altitude of 300 metres above sea level: its average yield is about 35 quintals per hectare. The maceration on the skins took place for a period of 15 days as well as the alcoholic fermentation which took place in stainless steel. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged in new French oak barriques of the Allier and Troncais varieties for 12 months.
Montiano 2016 di Falesco Cotarella announces itself in the glass with an intense ruby red colour. On the nose, it releases aromas of cherry and small red fruits in jam intertwined with enveloping notes of vanilla and sweet spices. The taste is full and round, supported by a velvety tannic texture and a captivating fresh-savoury balance. The finish is long and persistent. At the table, it goes well with cured meats and aged cheeses and succulent first and main courses based on red meats and game.
