The title Etna Rosso Josè Maria di Vita Nova is a tribute in the name to the parents of the owner and founder Marco Giachino. "When tasting an Etna Rosso, the glass that contains it becomes a cup, a trophy to be raised in a sign of victory, because every sip of this wine is the result of a daily struggle: against the heights, the slopes, and the extreme temperatures, a struggle in which, however, at bottom, the volcano is always on the side of those who work to give this nectar back to the community." These are the words of Marco who approached Etna viticulture only in 2015, being dazzled by it. The Nerello Mascalese vines grow at 600m above sea level, in the Feudo di Mezzo district. The vineyard, which faces north, is partly composed of young vines (replanted with the traditional bush vine system) and partly of vines about 60 years old, growing on volcanic soil, lean, shallow, and rich in mineral substances. The grape harvest is late and the selection of the bunches is manual and rigorous. The red vinification is traditional, with a maceration of 10-15 days, followed by aging for 12 months, part in steel and part in French oak barrels, never new.
The wine Etna Rosso Josè Maria di Vita NovaEtna Rosso Josè Maria di Vita Nova is a light and bright ruby red; on the nose, it is very elegant, with floral notes of geranium, cherries in jam, dried plum, and black pepper, then hints of vanilla and tobacco. In the mouth, it is delicate, ethereal, with a beautiful freshness and the characteristic dark minerality. A highly versatile wine, it pairs very well with fresh pasta maltagliati with Tuscan kale and sausage.
