Chianti Castiglioni di Frescobaldi was obtained from a blend of Sangiovese (90%) and Merlot (10%) grapes grown in the vineyards of the Castiglioni estate located near Montespertoli (FI) along the Via di Castiglioni, built by the ancient Romans to connect the north of Tuscany to Rome. Alcoholic fermentation with maceration on the skins took place for 10 days at a temperature of 25° C. The ageing process took place for 6 months in steel plus a further month in the bottle. The Castiglioni 2016 can be considered an excellent expression of the Chianti DOCG which today includes a vast territory that falls (in whole or in part) in the provinces of Florence, Siena, Arezzo, Pisa, Pistoia and Prato. The name Chianti derives from the Latin clangor in reference to the "noise" caused by the hunting trips that took place in the woods between Florence and Siena (the original area of Chianti). According to other sources, the term comes from Clante or the name of an important Etruscan family that once settled in the territory.
The Chianti Castiglioni by Frescobaldi is presented in the glass with a ruby red colour with purple reflections. Floral notes of violet emerge on the nose combined with intense aromas of cherry and small berries. The sip is soft and harmonious, characterised by smooth and well-integrated tannins and a lively fresh-savoury trail that persists in the finish. Excellent as a wine for the whole meal, it goes well with cured meats and semi-aged cheeses as well as with land recipes based on red meats and game.
