The Chianti Classico Riserva Contessa di Radda di Geografico takes its name (and wears its face) from Countess Willa of Tuscany, mother of the famous Marquess Hugo of Tuscany, mentioned by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy as the "Great Baron". The Countess, founder of the oldest Benedictine monastery in Florence, the Abbey of Santa Maria, better known as Badia Fiorentina, was an active part in the history of Radda, Florence, and the Chianti area in general. This Reserve is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Colorino grapes, from vineyards in Radda and Gaiole in Chianti. The grapes are vinified in steel and the wine then ages for 18 months, half in large casks, half in barriques.
The Chianti Classico Riserva Contessa di Radda di Geografico shows in the glass a bright ruby color with garnet shades. The olfactory impact is vinous, fruity, and spicy, with notes of cherry, blackberry, blueberry jam, green pepper, sandalwood, and light cocoa. In the mouth, the tannin makes itself felt, but is well balanced by the softness of the fruit and the glyceric alcoholic envelopment. Very good with marinated bacon, slightly smoked and slowly cooked on the grill.
